I ended up doing the fass stk-1003 kit. it was about $93 The parts fit like it was made for this, and I retained the "spring" action of the fuel basket that will keep the pickup tube on the bottom of the tank. apparently this is because the plastic tanks will sag with a full tank of fuel.
anyway. Heres how it went. I took the fatory pump out of the housing and removed the press regulator. the fass pickup tube parts go right into the grommet where the regulator goes. I drilled out the bottom of the fuel module so the tube would poke through. I pre assembled it all and realized that the spring action could push the plastic tube all the way to the bottom of the tank, and possibly blocking it. so I decided to put an otiker clamp on the inside to prevent this. after I reassembled it all I figured it would be a good idea to melt the end and flare it out to keep it in place. I am going to put the factory screen on it also. it should work good.
