I bought a truck 2yrs ago specifically to do this swap, and I’m getting ready to start now. This is going to be a 5.3L engine going into a 2003 4WD Dakota. I’ve been following every build on here, and the ZL1 Durango answered a lot of questions. Thank you so much for such a detailed build!
At this time, I’m beginning to gather all the parts I think I’ll need, so I wanted to list everything that I have in my list of items and questions; and hopefully I can get some feedback on anything I may have missed.

- Complete truck engine with all accessories, including AC. It seems there’s a bunch of places to acquire engines from. I’m considering a reputable vendor rather than the local yards (been burned too many times) If anyone has suggestions, I’m all ears.
- Cable TB, or DBW?
Pros/cons? - 4WD engine mount adapter plates from LSDAK – will I use these with the mounts/perches from the 3.9 engine?
- I like the headers in the ZL1 Durango. What did you use for the rest of the exhaust? I’m in a county that has emissions inspection, and I’d like to prove that this can be kept compliant, so I’ll need the cats.
- Radiator recommendations? - What have you used for hoses?
- I plan on removing the regulator and using the stock fuel pump
- I can’t use the existing trans because it’s a NV3500 with the integrated bellhousing (nor would I want to keep it, since it has almost 300,000 miles on it) I was planning to go with a new AX15.
- I’d like to keep the stock gauges. From what I’ve read, I need to retain the Dodge sensors to make them work.
- My truck is a manual trans, so the VSS is in the rear diff
- I know the tach will be an issue. Has anyone had any luck with these? I realize they’re intended for Jeeps, but maybe? www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/electronics/tj-xj-crank-position-tach-emulator/
