Awesome info. I don't know if the pan clearing is worth $400 to me but well see when I drop the engine in...

Here is the truck oil pan with tape indicating 7.75 inches from the transmission and 5.5 inches down from the block. It will absolutely clear without cutting the crossmember. You just lose some oil capacity.

I thinks my crossmember is different than the older trucks. My 98 is alot fatter. The pan may clear after all.

Scott, Thanks for bringing Your truck by. It is the best feeling Dakota that I have ever ridden in and it definatly has inspired me to kick off my project. The power and refinement of your drivetrain is a sharp contrast to how a 5.9l feels. I may still be interested In those rear brakes too. My next step is to water sand blast The frame and paint it then replace every Brake line before I can move on to the next step.

No problem.
Looks like you got a pretty good start. Florida truck. Lots of surface rust. But that's an easy fix.
I will be very interested in knowing about the crossmember. I can measure mine in the morning so we can compare.

Got any pics of the crossmember from the bottom? I am going to check out my 98 when I get home.

Here it shows how close it aligns with the crossmember. You can measure from the trans crossmember forward.

From the top it does look like the crossmember is thinner. I can't recall if I have a picture like this to compare. I will look around.

Update: I broke my foot at work and have not really worked on the truck. I have my friend finishing the sandblasting and painting, and then we will be test fitting the engine. I believe my harnesses are done as well.
